What does a small-business website software stack actually cost?

We modeled 10 real reference architectures across three states: the lowest legitimate cash floor, a lean paid stack, and a more typical paid stack. This is a transparent planning model—not a survey and not a vendor quote.

Median floor

$9.95/mo

Using free tiers where legitimate, while forcing a positive floor when paid hosting/platform infrastructure is required.

Median lean paid

$37/mo

The smallest paid stack we would budget without pretending every supporting layer must be premium.

Median typical

$88/mo

A fuller recurring stack with common paid support layers for the business model.

Free tiers can legitimately cover the first version; paid spend rises with audience and commerce needs.

A serious physical catalog needs a paid commerce core; apps and lifecycle tooling drive the typical case.

Method

What the three numbers mean

  1. Free-tier floor: use legitimate free tiers, but never model $0 when the architecture requires paid hosting or a paid commerce core.
  2. Lean paid: pay for the core layer that removes the biggest launch constraint; keep optional layers free where practical.
  3. Typical: add common paid email, forms, SEO, automation or higher-capacity infrastructure appropriate to the architecture.

Across all 10 models, mean monthly cost is $11.38 at the floor, $50 lean paid, and $126.40 typical.

FAQ

How to use this research

Is this a survey of what small businesses actually spend?

No. This is an original planning model built from Website Stack Index plan checkpoints and 10 reference architectures. It is designed to make stack economics comparable, not to estimate population spending.

What does free-tier floor mean?

It is the lowest plausible monthly software cash cost using legitimate free tiers where appropriate. If the architecture requires paid hosting or a paid commerce core, the floor must stay above zero.

What is excluded?

One-time design/development labor, domain registration, payment processing, taxes, custom enterprise contracts and usage overages are excluded unless a scenario note says otherwise.

Can I use the CSV?

Yes. Download the CSV and cite Website Stack Index with the September 24, 2026 model date. Re-check live vendor prices before making a purchase decision.
