Decision framework

Calculate from requirements, not from a pre-built bundle

Decision 1

Price the required layers first

Start with the site/hosting layer, then add commerce, forms or booking only when the business actually needs them.

Decision 2

Separate launch cost from growth cost

Email automation, paid SEO software and workflow automation are often growth-stage additions, not day-one requirements.

Decision 3

Keep people and processing separate

This calculator models recurring software. Developers, designers, ads, payment processing and domain registration are separate line items.

Don't buy this if

The cheapest stack is often the one with fewer categories.

  • Don't buy paid automation because you think a “real business” needs automation. Add it after a repetitive workflow exists.
  • Don't buy a CRM because a comparison article says every business needs one. A solo operator may be fine with forms + email.
  • Don't buy paid SEO software before you have pages worth measuring and an actual publishing plan.
  • Don't pay for advanced ecommerce infrastructure if you are not selling products yet.
FAQ

Website cost questions

How much should a small-business website cost per month?

A lean software stack can be well under $100 per month, while ecommerce, lifecycle email, premium hosting and automation can move a stack into the hundreds. The right number depends on required layers rather than a universal package.

Does this calculator include a web developer?

No. It estimates recurring software only. Contractor, agency and custom-development costs are separate because they vary much more than software subscriptions.

Do I need paid SEO software at launch?

Usually not unless organic search is already an active growth channel. Free search-console and analytics tools are often enough while a new site establishes its content process.

Should I buy automation software immediately?

Only when you have a repeatable manual workflow worth automating. Buying automation before the workflow exists often adds complexity without saving meaningful time.
